How Card Counting Works

Card counting is a mathematical technique that tracks the ratio of high cards to low cards remaining in the deck. According to Britannica's analysis of card counting, the fundamental principle is simple: when more high cards (10s, face cards, Aces) remain in the deck, the player has an advantage.

Why High Cards Favor the Player

  • Blackjacks: More 10s and Aces mean more blackjacks, which pay 3:2 to the player but only 1:1 (push) for the dealer
  • Dealer Busts: Dealers must hit on 16 or less. High cards cause more dealer busts
  • Doubles and Splits: Doubling down and splitting pairs become more profitable with high cards
  • Insurance: Side bets become profitable at high true counts

Research from the UNLV Center for Gaming Research has documented how a true count of +1 shifts approximately 0.5% of edge toward the player. At a true count of +2 or higher, skilled players can achieve a positive expectation.

Running Count vs. True Count

Understanding the difference between running count and true count is essential for effective card counting:

Running Count

The running count is simply the sum of all card values you've seen. Start at 0, then add or subtract based on each card dealt. This raw number tells you how the deck composition has shifted, but it doesn't account for how many cards are left.

True Count

The true count normalizes your running count by the number of decks remaining:

True Count Formula: True Count = Running Count Γ· Decks Remaining

Example: Running count of +6 with 2 decks remaining = True Count of +3

This conversion is crucial because a running count of +6 means something very different with 6 decks left (TC +1) versus 1 deck left (TC +6). The American Gaming Association notes that true count is what professional players use to determine bet sizing.
